Are you considering hosting a micro-wedding in your -or someone else’s- backyard? You have my full support! Every backyard wedding I’ve attended has a special place in my heart. The coziness, the whimsy, I’m here for it ALL. Here are some tips to make sure your backyard bash is the stuff of wedding legends.
First things first, assess the potential: Look for flat areas for seating, dancing, and dining. Keep an eye out for sprinkler heads, and any pesky gopher holes or ant colonies unless you want some uninvited guests.
Weatherproofing: Colorado has a mind of her own, so be prepared. Can you move the party indoors easily? If not, plan to rent a tent or canopy to shield your guests from rain or shine. It's like insurance for your day. A stockpile of umbrellas is always a good idea too!
Light It Up: String up some lights to keep the party vibe alive. Pro tip: LED lights are energy-efficient and won't turn your electric bill into a horror story. Amp up the romance with fairy lights, lanterns, or even chandeliers hanging from trees or your tent.
Seating Strategy: No one likes to stand around awkwardly at a wedding. Make sure you've got enough seating for everyone. Get creative with benches, hay bales, or even picnic blankets for a laid-back vibe. Bonus points if you have comfy cushions, blankets, and a fire pit!
Bathroom Plan: Do you have enough bathrooms to accommodate your guests? If not, look into renting porta-potties so you don’t leave your guests running to the bushes.
Sound Check: Get yourself a good sound system or hire a DJ to keep the music going. A killer playlist is essential for any wedding, just make sure your neighbors are cool with a little late-night noise.
Food Fun: Food trucks, BBQ buffet, or DIY taco bar—take your pick! Just make sure there’s enough to go around.
Leave No Trace: Have a designated cleaning crew for the end of the night. Your neighbors will appreciate not finding stray champagne corks in their flower beds the next morning.
Keep it simple, keep it real, and your backyard wedding will be a blast without all the cheesy clichés. Cheers to keeping it cool and kicking off your happily ever after! 🍻
